Course contents
The course aim is to initiate cooperation between The FAMU Photography Dept (Documentary Photography studio) and students at the Dept. of Sociology, ISS, Faculty of Sociology, Charles University in the treatment of group artistic and research efforts. The course is anchored in theory and concept in visual sociology, visual anthropology and art research in which the intent is to investigate mutual blending of these perspectives. This also originates in the related principles and expectations linked to documentary genres such as documentary photography on one side and visual sociology and anthropology on the other. These are the two „genres“ in which in their historical development always blended scientific and artistic processes. Documentarists often investigate the location by processes very similar to social sciences. Social scientists, particularly qualitatively (ethnographically) oriented researchers maintain rather artistic rather strictly scientific approaches. This links the concept of arts research to sociology and anthropology which understand the overlapping of various study approaches, styles of consideration (and judgement), paradigms and skills as a necessary requirement of experimental and innovative manners of understanding the reality we live in. Review of on-going research processes, communication and personal relationships between students and, in part, instructors/artistic approaches will be an inseparable part of the project.
The topic focus of the research project, implemented over the course of the semester is not determined beforehand. Its selection will be the the result of the blending of artistic and research perspectives. Also, the roles individual students have in each topic is not pre-determined. The artist or sociologist roles are not to be limited by study; our aim is, rather, to blur the borders between artistic approaches and social sciences.
