Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic introduction to photography.

Mode of study

Place and time: UVS Beroun, according to groups in two rounds according to the list.

Introduction aims: Students will be introduced to the theory bases of photography, development technology in relation to the development potential of shots on B/W sensitive film.

Introduction to the history of photography and student lectures on that topic.

Practical aims: The practical provides a fundamental introduction to the issues of photographic depiction in four topic series, laboratory processing and enlarging of B/W photography. Students, divided into smaller groups will gradually go through individual workstations, where upon example processing practice with theory presentation, they will be guided towards independent work and a confirmation of acquired knowledge. The results arising at all work stations will be evaluated in a group. Group evaluations arising from the works will serve for further instruction and assessment of errors or proper procedures. Students are introduced to classic B/W analog photographic procedures (portrait, figure) and color (documentary) as well ass digital technology.

Doc. Mgr. Martin Steckert (lead), guests - colleagues in areas of photography history and theory and Photography Dept. students as assistents.

Student must have their own functioning analog camera with cinematic film.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Credit is awarded by the practical leader upon completion of the following conditions:

Active participation in executing the practical

Completing the assignment and its assessment by an appropriate instructor.

Course contents

Place and time: UVS Beroun, Barrandova 30, according to group arrangements on the 13th and 14th of Sept and 20th and 21st of Sept, 2018.

Recommended train departure time is 8:03 from the Prague Main Station and 8:10 from the Prague-Smihov station arriving at Beroun a 8:40.

Student requirements upon start of the practical:

Stdudents must have their own functioning analog camera with cinema-film!

Considering reconstruction there are only limited boarding possibilities: 2 rooms with 5-7 beds and 4 rooms with two beds; a total of 20 beds. Other students will return to Prague around 20:00 and come again at 9:30. The charge for board is 55 Czech crowns. There is a modest kitchen. Bring snack and drinks with you. No shop are nearby.

Extent: 2 days

Place and time + course:

Beroun, Classroom, exercise room and boarding center, Barrandova 30, Thurs. (9:30) - Friday (around 19:00)

Students travel on their own to the location. Trains leave from the Prague Main or Smichov Stations. The travel from the station to Beroun to UVS Beroun takes about 10 minutes.

Students will be divided into 4 groups. The practical takes place at UVS Beroun in two studios, two photo darkrooms and an exterior exercise at a chosen location in the town.

The schedule with work division into individual workstations will be available at the location prior to the start of instruction.

Topic Series and lead instructors:

1/ Photography in the studio (portrait and still life) - working with light and large format equipment (M. Stecker)

Studio A - introduction to studio technology, large format devices, their potential and use, photographing portraits - resulting work from digital technology

2/ Photography in the studio (portrait, figure) - working with a model and digital camera (M. Stecker and Photography Dept. students.

Studio B - Portret, figure, group portrait, manners of lighting, working with flash - resulting work from digital technology

Attention!!!! The work in the studio is the same, divided into individual workstations: see list.

3/ Photography on location (documentary) - (J. Steckerova and Photography Dept. students)

Working with cinema-film cameras, report and documentary photography, man, place, landscape; approaches to the topic, image composition, samples of digital camera work - resulting work on one's own camera on assigned color negative cinema-film, color enlargement 10x15cm processed in the mini-lab.

4/ Selection and adjustment of photographs for exhibit whose start will be on Friday 21.9.2018 at 17:00 at the Jiřího Jeníčka Gallery in Beroun. (J. Steckerova, and Photography Dept. students)

One student will be authorized to process the substrate for printing posters and exhibition invitations.

5/ Lab processing ( working in the darkroom) - (M. Stecker, Photography Dept. students)

Developing film, arranging contacts from B/W negatives, completed photograms.

Credit will be awarded by the Practice lead upon completion of the following requirements:
