Learning outcomes of the course unit

Group student work regardless of year of study on a given topic of social relevance based on acquired knowledge from invited professionals and one's experience. The project topic varies and is registered before the beginning of the academic year.

All students, regardless of study year, may participate in the project. A requirement is a strong interest in the topic and desire to adapt one's photography to the overall concept.

Mode of study

Lectures preceed the actual photography and there will subsequently be a trip to a selected location connected with a several-day stay. The focused work, including working with archive material, leads to an understanding of the selected issues and their adequate rendering.

The project will be completing with an exhibition in an appropriate space. Therefore, a common resolution of issues in the selection of photographs, appropriate presentation adjustment and the overall presentation will be part of the final phase.

Course contents

A place of much attention

Throughout history the are many places in which many various important event have taken place which were important for the Czech state. Many have significantly influenced the development of society, its behaviour and direction, others have be phenomena of beginning or continuing societal processes. These places create in part that which we are today. How do those places look today? Do they carry the traces of those historical events? How do we behave towards those places of great attention?

The aim of this project is to show in photography how these well-known and sometimes forgotten places of distant and not-so-distant Czech history. Photography is to capture their appearance and life without ornamentation and idealization.

The locations will be selected with the collaboration of historians. The photos may be B/W or color according to that which will best correspond to the location and the selected original approach. The exhibition will accentuate the selected topic in a less traditional form.

The project is founded on a group acquaintance or the history and present, investigation of it impressions in the area or surroundings of the city settlements, in contemporary life. Shooting is based on a thorough acquaintance with the issues of the given location. Lectures preceed the shooting and a subsequent trip to and several day stay there. The purpose of the work, including working with archive material, leads to an understanding of the selected issues and their sufficient depiction.

The project will be completed with an exhibition in an appropriate space. In the final phase, group issues on the selection of photos, appropriate exhibit adjustments and overall presentation issues will be resolved.

The exhibition is planned as part of the Boskovice Festival 2014.

According to the number of students registered, the project focus and location will be determined.

Tasks:

Selection of place and searching for needed materials

Photos from selected locations arranged according to the concept which is finally determined in the selection of material and research of the location.

During the work, examples of contact sheets or print previews will be available.

Submission:

The number of photos and manner of processing corresponds to the topic and selected photographic concept. This is determined after a group consultation with the Project lead.

Recommended or required reading

The selection will be supplemented upon determination of the project.

Assessment methods and criteria

Grading:

Credit (Winter semester) for completion and samples of photos

Exam (Summer semester) graded based on the fulfillment of individual assignments and submission of selected photos. A requirement for grading is a required 60% attendance at lectures, participation in prescribed required group consultations and submission of agreed photos in a defined digital format.
