Learning outcomes of the course unit
This course serves as an introduction to Sound design study issues.
Aim:
- Instruction in the basic sound equipment and technology.
- Recording and assessing group sound exercises.
Mode of study
In the introductory lecture students are introduced to the function of hearing, development of recording, recording techniques and subsequently the use of the recording equipment with which they will, in two groups, be sent into the field to take in their surroundings, not visually, but auditorily. According to their choice they will perform a recording of any event - environment which has caught their attention with its sound. In the afternoon section, in listening and mutual evaluation of the results there will be an introduction to the current technology and the potential of the technology of the FAMU Studio sound department.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Active participation in presentation and exercises.
Course contents
For all FAMU studies except Sound:
Instruction on the types and frequency characteristics of microphones and types of sound recording. Practical instruction on sound recording techiques. Assignment of individual tasks - ex; recording a short sound report: A conversation of two people in real surroundings (including ambient sound, and background noise without editing). Maximum length of 5 minutes. Listening to and evaluating the resulting recordings in a studio.
Tour of sound workplaces around the Faculty. Introduction to their equipment with recording, editing, adjustment and sound mixing equipment, and the use of technological procedures in developing sound for film and TV exercises.
Students will use the material and equipment of the FAMU Studio. Extent: 1 day.
