Learning outcomes of the course unit
Acting with a mask.
The work of and actor with a mask is very similar to the work of an animator with a puppet, inanimate object and in some sense with an drawn figure. This course approaches the nature of this manner of acting. The internal feelings of the figure theatrically played enables the students to better understand the psychological processes of the actorin creating characters and using them in their own work with a puppet or other inanimate object in animated film.
Mode of study
Intensive instruction through a workshop practical taking place at the UVS Poněšice. Part of instruction is physical exercises. Close-fitting exercise attire is necessary, without print in neutral colors (grey, black, brown).
This course takes place in the Summer semester 2017/2018 during April 2018
The date and time will be determined at the beginning of the Summer semester.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
This course provides a basic glimpse into acting in make-up from and anthropological perspective. It is not necessary to have any special preparation.
Maximum capacity is 15 students.
Course contents
A study of the type of masks according to acting technique.
Neutral, character, expressive and dynamic.
Classification according to production technology and mask function.
Character masks
Masks over the entire face
Half-masks - covering part of the face
Expressive masks covering the entire body.
Static and dynamic masks (ex: artificial or projected)
Interpretation of individual masks.
Pereive the content and form of masks; respect material and from that position investigate manners of presenting a mask. Establish and play a situation with a mask.

Grading method and criteria
Credit is awarded based on activity in the intensive workshop. Students create a short theatre study with the use of solid and artificial masks.

Assessment methods and criteria
Active approach to physical exercise, which guides one to the understanding of fundamental relations of the human body.
Note
Every human being is capable of expressive movement, because movment is one of the first manifestations of life. An actor can become anyone desired. Understanding the function of a gesture and the mutual relations of individual parts of the human body is a process founded on the performance of body exercise systems. The pantomime principle of acting (embodiement) is the principle basis for any acting expression.
Group maximum is 15.
