Tour 2 - November 2

On Sunday, Oct 28 we celebrate 100th Anniversary of the Foundation of an Independent Czechoslovakia and on Friday, Nov 2 we will remind this event during our tour.

Meeting time: 9:30

Place: „Hradčanská“ A-line subway vestibule (https://goo.gl/maps/VByUwte69ev)

What to expect? I have booked a visiting slot of the current exhibition organized by „Memory of Nation“, read the short annotation: „We have transformed the space below the former statue of the dictator Stalin into an audio-visual exposition. Here, we are confronted by the most crucial moments of Czechoslovak modern history and, foremost, two of its totalitarianisms, Nazism and Communism, including the heroism of the Second World War, the fates of political prisoners, dissent, informers, the Prague Spring, August 1968, Normalization, and November 1989.“

After we see the exhibition, we will continue with exploring the neighboring area of Prague.

On Nov 16 we will once again meet at the horse statue (https://goo.gl/maps/nbTDWqeMtsj).

The meeting time is 9:40 exactly, please don’t be late

The program is quite packed: a) National Muzeum newly re-open building, b) Vinohrady district as a wealthy neighbourhood, c) remains of Duke Canal’s gardens (today’s Rieger’s park), d) old Jewish cemetery, e) TV Tower (finally!) and f) large cemeteries at Olšany. We will mostly walk and it is uphill.

Tour 4 - November 23

Tour 5 - December 14

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Basic knowledge of European history, awareness of WWI and WWII, familiarity with the history of the region since WWII. We will start the course with a short recap anyway.

Course contents

Students with the teacher’s guidance reveal the essence of the famous city and the culture that has formed it over the centuries to this day. They will leave the beaten daily paths to explore the urban jungle textbook of modern times in Central Europe. Gothic Prague, Renaissance Prague, Baroque Prague, Prague that tore down its walls to give rise to new settlements and finally Prague so remote that its inhabitants journey to see Charles Bridge.

From the structure of the city we move on to its particularities - houses, parks, events and suburbs, often neglected and falling apart.

Within one semester (two in total if students attend both the autumn and spring term courses) students may try to read the city and its structure to grasp the historical and social background of it as well as discover important artists/galleries.
