Learning outcomes of the course unit

During the course of this lecture students will be introduced to the craft of the production designer and his role in the film industry. Based on references students will gain practical ideas and craft related information which they can use in a visual treatment for their own short film.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

This module is a prerequisite for further consultations with Jitka Šívrová, who will be a set design supervisor.

Course contents

Introduction to the following topics:

  1. The role of the Production Designer
  2. Structure of the art department and key roles
  3. Color theory and symbolism in film
  4. Patina, texture and materials
  5. Props, furniture and practical lights
  6. Costumes and wardrobe
  7. Basic film make-up and fx make-up
  8. Visual concept: Moodboards, Sketches, Drafts, Collages, Scale Models and Storyboards
  9. Introduction to SketchUp
  10. Documentation: Blueprints, Floorplans, Concepts, Breakdown Sheet, Set list (Priority list)
