Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students gain familiarity with a variety of techniques useful for working with actors. Students understand acting as an art form having many valid approaches, sharing fundamental principles.

Mode of study

In-class exercises, lecture, occasionally examples of acting styles are screened.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

The class is limited to 22 students. It is necessary to come to the information session for the class at the start of the semester, in order to insure your place in the class.

Course contents

A survey of important approaches to acting. Students will look at theories and techniques from acting teachers such as Stanislavski, Meyerhold, Lecoq, Brecht, Grotowski, the Method Teachers (Strasberg, Adler and Meisner) and Improvisation Gurus (Spolin, Johnstone, Book).

Course Outline

Session One: Introductory, course expectations, introductions

Session Two: Stanislavski (exercises for creative state)

Assignment: „Stanislavski's System: Pathways for the Actor“ in course reader

Session Three: Stanislavski continued (exercises for work on a role)

Assignment: View scenes from Eisenstein's film Ivan the terrible.

Read article on Meyerhold's Biomechanics in course reader.

Session Four: Meyerhold, exercises for immediate expressivity

Assignment: Read article on Jacques Lecoq and the Neutral mask in course reader

Session Five: Jacques Lecoq, exercises for immediate expressivity, transfer exercises

Session Six: Jacques Lcoq continued, exercises in neutral mask

Assignment: „Bertold Brecht: On Whose Behalf do we Act?“ in course reader

Session Seven; Bertolt Brecht

Assignment: Read article on Grotowski in course reader

Session Eight: Grotowski and First test (Objective test on material from course handouts, given in last 20 minutes of class)

Assignment: Read articles on Method Acting in course reader: The Paradox of Lee Strasberg, Sandy Meisner: The Knock on the Door

Session Nine: Method Acting

Assignment: Prepare written responses to 4 articles from the course reader

Session Ten: Schools of Improvisation: Viola Spolin and Keith Johnstone

Session Eleven: Schools of Improvisation continued: Stephen Book, Improvisation Technique on Scripted Scenes

Assignment: Turn in written responses to 4 articles from course reader, send by email.

Session Twelve: Additional exercises from the acting approaches covered in the course

Session Thirteen: Additional exercises from the acting approaches covered in the course

Session Fourteen: Review and Final exam

Assessment methods and criteria

Two tests (33 % ), written response to readings (33%), participation in class exercises (33%). Students must attend 70% of classes to receive credit.
