Learning outcomes of the course unit
The aim of the course in not only to present a basic picture of the given part of the development of European visual culture and provide a basic collection of works and style attributes which are an expression of our collective visual memory but also to give and cultivate the instruments of understanding and comprehension of historical visual artifacts, their relations and contexts.

This course presumes a fundamental orientation in the history of art and European cultural history, and a visual sensitivity required of FAMU students.

I. THE BAROQUE AND CLASSICISM
- The change in the image of the world
- Baroque religiosity
- The Reformation and Counter-Reformation.
- The Baroque and Classicism as cultural types.
- Classicism and its opponency
- Contact with non-European cultures and its visual reflections.
- Architecture - a new understanding of space, material and construction
- Dynamism and its classicizing tendencies.
- Constructors and building blocks, designing and executing practices.
- Sculpture - drawnings, sketches, models, workshops.
- Gesamtkunstwerk as a program
- Architecture and exterior sculptures and statues as space and landscape creating phenomena.
- New aesthetics of city and country spaces.
- Baroque transformation of the Medieval countryside.
- New approaches in the relationship of the sacred and the profane.
- Baroqu iconography
- Marketing art, collecting and the media image of art heritage.
- Trade organizations and workshop practices.
- Art Classicism aesthetics and theory
- Baroque principles and Baroquization of the Baroque.
II. NEOCLASSICISM AND ROMANTISM
- The end of the Baroque and the new period of art.
- Birth of the history of art and visual criticism.
- The continuity of the aesthetics of Classicism and its opposition.
