Learning outcomes of the course unit

Mode of study

Lectures with discussions in classes. Based upon theory writings, we will investigate imagination and map areas in which this overlaps with philosophy, theory, art, media and technology.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Requirements: general knowledge of European cultural history.

Course contents

A fundamental question: How is it possible that fiction can arouse deep (and real) emotion. However, is the one who experiences them, aware of their „unrealness?“

In order to be able to answer this question it is necessary to research:

1/ The modern history of the concept of imagination, its limits in regard to related concepts (imaginary, fictional: fancy and fantasy, etc.).

2/ To understand the function and operation of imagination, not only in art, but in general, to focus on the particular and i irreplacable ways of managing reality for imagination.

3/ Particularly in the current context, to investigate similarities and differences between the following concepts: real, possible, current, virtual, etc. A key issue will be visual imagination.

Recommended or required reading

The open collection of literature to be worked with will be determined at the beginning of the academic year in the creation of the workshop content.

Assessment methods and criteria

Only the capability of an original approach to the topic is judged.
