Course contents

In one day masterclass reputable sound artist Félix Blume will share his approach of sound and listening in his work, as a sound engineer for film and documentary, as well as in his own artisitc projects. He will present excerpts of films he has worked on to explain in detail his methods, primarily based on field recordings, presenting different microphones setup and comparing them, defining how technique can deserve ideas and creation. He will present as well some example of sound editing, in film industry as well as in artistic projects. Trough discussion and listening session, he will explain how his work moves to personal projects, as soundscapes, sound installation and video art.

Part of the workshop is the screening of two films on March 4th, 8:30pm at Kino Ponrepo (Curupira: Creature of the Woods, France, 2018, 35 min) and Fevers/Fiebres, France, 2013, 45 min). This event is organized by the Agosto Foundation as part of a series of film screenings and discussions on the theme of the future, nature,landscape, society, art, ecology and entropy.

Félix Blume is a sound artist and sound engineer. He currently works and lives between Mexico and France. His personal work is based on field recordings using sound as a basic material in various audio works, videos, actions and installations. He also works with communities in public spaces. Blume blurs the line between sounds and music by changing the noise inherent in sounds. As a sound collector, he has a large sound library recorded from different parts of the world that he freely shares on the Internet.

His sound pieces were broadcasted in galleries and radios from all over the world: Arte Radio (FR), Kunst Radio (AT), Deutschland Radio Kultur (DE), Radio Nacional de Espana (ES), Phaune Radio (FR), ABC Radio (AU), Radio Panik (BE), Radio Grenouille (FR) among others, as well as in different spaces such as Centre Pompidou and Musée d’Orsay. His work Los Gritos de México was granted the “Pierre Schaeffer” prize in the French festival Phonurgia (Paris) and an honourable mention in the Bienal de Radio in Mexico City. His work as a sound engineer centers around sound recording and sound design for documentaries, feature films and video art, as well as collaboratons with different directors and visual artists (as Francis Alys). Felix graduated from INSAS Film School in Belgium and an Audiovisual Technician Brevet in France. He has given workshops in France, Mexico, Italy or Belgium. His last film Curupira: Creature of the Woods is on the program of THE BERLINALE 2019.

Assessment methods and criteria

100% attendance on 1.3 at the workshop and on 4.3 at the screening in Ponrepa. An essay of 2 standard pages on one of the presented works by Felix Blum.
