Learning outcomes of the course unit

The aim of the screen is a collective audience experience with an introduction and group discussions. For expanding this process an analytical text is required at the end of the semester.

Mode of study

This course consists of screenings in the large hall at the City Library. Prior to screenings is an introduction and subsequent moderated discussion. Often there is the participation of the filmmaker. At the end of the semester the submitted texts are evaluated.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Participation in screenings. Some presented films may be view from DVD but the real group screening and subsequenty discussion are part of the key experience in this course.

Course contents

Based on discussions on the Screenings program and conversations from the previous year with a number of students, who complained about the overly artistic, that is, experimental character of the program, we have chosen another type of program style for this year.

Winter Semester: The program will be presented mainly at the City Library and will be focused primarily upon last year's internationally widely distributed premieres (this year's are significantly more expensive and less available and will be a part of next year's program). The program has been formed with two types of films:

a) widely distributed films which have undisputed artistic qualities or ambitions

b) widely distributed films which have been extremely popular

Summer semester: The program will be presented at Lažanský Palac and will be focused exclusively on contemporary films of great artistic, social or experimental quality.

Assessment methods and criteria

CHARACTER OF THE WRITING:

The required text is an analysis of one of the screened films which focuses on the structural features of a work (that is; style, narrative form, poetry of an element) and its relationship to the topic, or plot of the film.

The text should not devot too much space to a description of events, facts about the film or filmmaker.

I ask that you write your own analysis of a film. This means do not write what the film is about but write about the events only when an event when you interpret it from your perspective. Write your own observations. It is not important that you write you own philosophical-psychological abstract moody analysis of the film or analysis and evaluation of individual aspects (that is, for example: camera, editing, directing, screenplay analysis, etc.), but do not forget to write concrete arguments why you believe that the incriminated film has that asset or liability you write about. Or write only what assets or liabilities there are but try to more precisely say WHY it is that way, as you write.

Do not fall into the usual affliction of our contemporary daily press reviewers which write trivially what happens in the film with out any argument affixing some superficial brand, maintaining the consumption spirit of today. Their review can hardly be considered a critique.

Try to develop your own film view: factual items of interest and relationship consider only in particular connects to your own original view on this or that aspect of the piece.

EXTENT OF THE SUBMITTED TEXT:

5400 characters including spaces, that is, 3 standard pages. Exact data may be given by your text editor, ex: in MS WORD it can be found in the „File“ menu under „Characteristics“, under the the title „statistical data.“

TEXT FORMAT AND MANNER OF SUBMISSION:

Name the file such: „yoursurname-filmtitle.rtf“.

Send you work in electronic form to this email address: vladimir.hendrich@seznam.cz

The work must be submitted by Jan. 18, at the latest.

The header is to include the title of the film being analysed and your name and surname. Without these items you work will not be graded.

Also, students not satisfied with the grade on the work may consider sitting an exam. Dates and times for the exam will be announced in the exam period times.

16.10.2017 THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE (Finland, 2017, 98min.)

Aging craftsman, Wikstroem decides to leave his alcoholic wife and fraudulent business. After episodic career as a poker player, he buys a failing restaurant in a lackluster part of Helsinki. We soon discover that under the hard-skin of our hero lies a great heart. Wikstroem offers a job to a young man in a seemingly hopeless situation. As is customary in Aki Kaurismaeki's films, humanity, friendship and humor shine through and add to this bittersweet comedy a bit of optimism.

The Silver Bear award for best direction at the 2017 Berliniale; Grand hall at 19:00

23.10.2017 Little Crusader (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, 2017, 90min)

Little Jenik the only son of the knight Bořka (Karel Roden), runs away from home. The desparate father follows his trail. Václav Kadrnka creates a stylistically clear adaptation of a romantic poem by Jaroslav Vrchlický and the quiet of the film style provides us an idea of a „historical road movie“ taking place in the Middle ages and attempts to determine the universal and timeless issues of maturing, relations to authority, loss of life and ability to admit one's failures.

Music: Irena a Vojtěch Havlovi. This film was awarded the grand prize - The Crystal Globe at this year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Disucssion with film artists after the screening. Grand Hall at 19:00

30.10.2017, VŠECHNO BUDE FAJN (Everything will be Fine, ČR 2017, 71 min.) Ceremonial Premiere!

This main role in this feature film by Robin Kvapil is played by the city of Brno. This film combines several storylines which gradually meet in the storytelling process. The main focus of the film is about an overly gullible but well-like Standa Kadlec and his pregnant wife Alena. We, as well, follow the fate of Standa's classmate from high school, Ladi, the direct assistant to the Brno Mayor Lang. While Standa's behaviour condemns him as a 'madman„, Ladi continues to rack up success after success. However, we gradually find out who actually is losing the most. Another storyline is played by Brno by Brno citizens as inhabitants with “typical„ approaches to life; brother government representatives, retired revolutionaries, “adorable" xenophobes and autistic artists.

Discussion after the screening with Robin Kvapil. Small Hall at 19:30.
