Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course aim is the development of analytical and stylistic skills in a general consideration of purposes and types of writings about art.

Mode of study

The classes start with the writing of a short text and then each lesson hour is reserved for a longer text by individual students which are then discussed.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Basic familiarity with audiovisual analysis methods is required.

Course contents

This course is intended primarily for master's students in which is required a basic knowledge of individual Audiovisual work analysis methods and the ability to formulate those thoughts in writing. The course in designed as a space for a rethinking of the presented manners of writing, their (meta)criticism and the possible exceeding into new original paths for writing.

At the beginning of the course students write some short one-page papers (analysis of an inspiring writing, critique or essay), on which is based group discussions about style, rhetoric, argument and genre which may be used in writing about audio visuals. Further on in the course each student freely selects a topic and method for writing a longer (approx. 8 page paper which is presented later in the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students are evaluated based on activity in class and originality and development of their texts.

Note

This course is scheduled once every two years. It is focused on refining viewpoints and the forming of opinions on contemporary art. The result is an investigation of the ontology (artistic) of the piece. The central idea of style is covered in a general and individual sense. The course also covers explanation discussions on concepts such as taste, authority, authenticity, errors and mistakes - and their content in objective and subjective dimensions. During the course students write brief papers on assigned topics.
