Learning outcomes of the course unit

We will introduce participants to the projector as a magic box for improvising with sound/noise

and image/light.

Projection:

Participants will develop ways of playing and interacting with the 16mm film projector – practicing projection manipulations with loops and objects. To complete the workshop, participants will play solo, duo or big band to bring alive expanded projection and sound improvisations.

Mode of study

projection

Prerequisites and co-requisites

We ask the students attempting the workshop to bring their own footage (or found-footage) to work on. It can be a few frames but 1 or 2 meters of film is best. Longer footage make it very hard to handle in the dark without making scratch all along the film strip. Positive or negative, it doesn’t matter, but it work best with quite contrast images. If students don’t have any footage to copy, we should be able to supply found-footage.

Course contents

Differences between shooting emulsion and print emulsion. Set up of the lab for flat-print. Practice of flat-print and discover the enormous potential of creativity allowed by this process. How to load a 16 mm projector and screening. This way of making copies will produce perfect footage for loops and will lead to „creative projection”.
