Learning outcomes of the course unit

The aim of the workshop is on-going review of contemporary trends in non-fiction as manifested at the progressive CPH DOX festival which has determined its own innovative path in the industry (changes in emerging formats of „classic“ pitching, inspiration from leading presentations, choice of selectors from inter-field areas - ex: people from MoMa, internet experts, etc.) Based on a collection of data, students develop analytical texts of the their own research segment. The aim of the data is to gather over a period of about 3 years and develop a comprehensive analysis of decisive processes. Student may further develop the topic in their diploma paper. The CPH DOX festival is interested in this data for their own use; to evaluate and open discussion about it.

Course contents

The purpose of this yearly workshop at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen is to introduce student to character of the contemporary selection process in non-fiction (including hybrid forms) and, also, systematically map out that process through ethnographic methods (observations, field journal, extensive interview).

The topic is a deeper analysis of industry systems in the documentary field: How current trends are „born“?, Who are the actual decision-makers who decide which film will be presented at a festival (either in development or final form)?, How do determine what will be selected and what not?, What are the criteria for their selection?, What types of artists, projects and presentations show up? - Do they have similar features? Is it possible to describe the contemporary form of so called „original documentaries“? How and why does the pitching model and entire manner of presentation of a film to the experts change?

The trip is ideally set for 4-5 master's students who will be selected based on their coverletter and participation in the Dramaturgy course, part of which is industry issues and their analysis.
