Learning outcomes of the course unit

  1. The course acquaints students with the area of new media, audio-visual art and tehcnology from a historical development: from the beginning of the 20th century to the basic overview of contemporary work, trends and tendencies.
  2. The course acquaints students through analysis of examples from history with the current contexts of fine art, film, theory and tehcnology.
  3. Students acquire a better understanding of the tools, strategies and technologies currently used.

Mode of study

Lectures are illustrated with documentary clips and images, readings from primary sources.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

1.General knowledge about the modern art and culture of 20th century.

2.Self study and ability to reflection and discussion

3.Preferably New Media History 1 taken prior to New Media History 2.

Course contents

The course provides a basic orientation in the historical contexts of art and technology; in new media art, videoart and computer art from the start of the 20th century to the present. The course traces partial topics of arts dialog with the development of technical tools n relation to societal and politcal changes, which the development of technology brings in selected examples. The course is lead through lectures with screening and analysis of audio-visual examples.

Topic scope:

Arts experiments influencing technology at the beginning of the century;

kinetic and lumino-kinetic arts;

beginnings of computing devices form the 1940s;

beginnings of video, experiments in working with video signals;

Portapak and artistic video review;

image as object;

arts networks, and first generation net-art;

Web 2.0;

bio-art;

interface and interactivity;

arts after the internet;

Assessment methods and criteria

Part of the final mark is the verification of knowledge of presented film and acquaintance with relevant literature. Students write a paper of 2 standard pages on which the oral exam is based.
