Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course will introduce the students to the theoretical and practical aspects of the French foil and Italian sabre fencing as taught at military academies at the end of the 19th century.

The acquired knowledge and skills are applicable in theater and film practice.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

No prior knowledge required to enrol for this course. To complete the course in Poněšice, good health is required.

Equipment: sportswear / footwear and protective gloves (compulsory), fencing mask (optional).

During the course it is necessary to pay attention to SAFETY and DISCIPLINE and strictly FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS given by the instructor.

Course contents

The content of the course comprises of the history and theory of the French foil and Italian sabre fencing and its practice at military academies at the end of the 19th century.

The practical part of the course starts with basic stances and steps, continuing with the basic weapon positions and parries, on to attacks, ripostes and irregular manouvres.

During basic training students get to know thrusts, attack renewals, feints, binds and their changes, beat attacks, glides and grazes, dodges and disengagements, all of which they then develop in set exercises.
