General information about admission process

Prior completion of a Bachelor`s programme at a university-level art school or a school with a related humanities focus, submission of creative work theretofore and a proposal for the candidate`s own project for an individual Master`s programme. Successful completion of the talent examination, which is the most important criterion for admission.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

A documentable completed Bachelor`s education in an artistic or related humanities area.

The procedure for recognition at AMU is governed by Articles 89 and 90 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 111/1998 Coll., as amended, and by the AMU Attendance and Examination Regulations (Articles 8, 14, 18).

Qualification requirements and regulations

A completed Bachelor`s education, an overview of creative activities heretofore, the ability to do independent creative work in close interaction with other fields of study in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at DAMU in the studios offered by the department.

Regulations: The Czech education system is governed by the Act on Higher Education Institutions, as amended (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.), and by the internal regulations of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Field of study characterization

Studies consist of main subjects (directing, dramaturgy, devising with objects, devising with sound etc.) and a series of short workshops with local and international artists. There is one purely theoretical subject. All the other subjects are primarily practical, consisting of making scenes and compositions. Students are required to create their own projects in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th semester. The 4th semester project is considered the final project. Students are encouraged to find their own aesthetic tools and ‘language’. Appropriate experts in the field are designated to be tutors for individual projects. Students further have a possibility to create direct connection to international environment, artists, and institutions as well as connection to Czech artists and companies.Written thesis and defence of the thesis as well as state exam are considered the final exam of the studies. Working language is English.

Key learning outcomes

A graduate is capable of creating his/her own conceptual artistic work underpinned with deep knowledge of the field and the ability of self-reflection. He/she is capable of collaborating in a team and of leading his/her own collective, and is oriented in the contemporary theatrical environment in the artistic as well as the economic and operational realms.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

The graduate is a highly independent artist capable of individual and collective work in the fields of contemporary performance, immersive theatre, objects theatre, media performance, site specific, community theatre, movement theatre, documentary theatre, visual theatre, scenographic installation etc. The graduates will be able to devising performance from a variety of material (sound, text, objects, music, video etc.); devising using one’s own material (not only interpreting already existing material); research and development of material; create a variety of dramaturgical structures, as well as perform themselves, and do basic organizational/production work.

Access to further studies

Possibility of doctoral studies in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre or other departments at DAMU or at other university-level art schools or schools with a similar humanities focus.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Studies are assessed by credits and examinations stipulated by study plans. The student is informed of these through the information system. The student registers for examinations using the information system, and is entitled to a second and third attempt to pass an examination. If neither of these attempts proves successful, the Dean may in exceptional cases permit a fourth attempt (administered by a commission). It is not permitted to repeat an examination for the main subjects or to repeat written examinations.

The credit is an ungraded form of assessment of studies. It is allocated upon fulfilment of requirements stipulated for individual subjects and is recorded in the information system with the word „Credited“ (Z). An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subjects. In the main subjects, examinations are administered by a commission. Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“.

Graduation requirements

Completion of the Master`s programme in all subjects and accumulation of the relevant number of credits. Completion of the State Master`s Examination.

A condition for advancement to the Master's examination is in particular the realisation of a final creative project with reflection.

The state final examination is graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“. The examination committee shall decide the overall assessment for the state final examination by vote in-camera.

The State Master`s Examination consists of the following parts:

the Master`s diploma thesis and its defence;

the history and theory of dramatic arts;

the history and theory of the field.
