Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course aim is the development of education knowledge in classical dance. This is primarily an analysis of new elements a la barre and au milieu at the intermediary stage of instruction (4th to 5th year). An ability to independently lead a classical dance class is created.

Mode of study

This course is linked to Classical Dance Methods 2. It contains a detailed analysis of Classical dance techniques at the intermediate level of instruction, i.e. the 4th and 5th study years of an 8 year curriculum of a Dance conservatory. Instruction uses the Agrippina Vaganova method. In this course students observe at dance conservatories and prepare the bachelor thesis paper.

Analysis of new elements (orientation list)

a la barre:

au millieu:

Based on the learning of new elements, student create a combination at the intermediate level of instruction which they mutually discuss and assess.

The music accompaniment at the intermediate years is more divers than in the basic level of insturction. The character of the music rhythm changes during exercises. In basic exercies, we maintain simple rhythm. We continue to emphasize the importance of music preparation which in many cases is shorter and defines the tempo of the exercise.

Although with A. Vaganova we find the definitive representative of the classical dance instruction method, we acquaint the students, at least briefly, with other instruction systems whose genesis is connected to other great figures of dance (ex: Cecchetti, Bournonville, Balanchine) and we compare their differences.

Based on observations at 4th and 5th study years at dance conservatories, interesting discussions arise in which students analyse their knowledge, some of which are applied in their educational activity or education practice.
