Learning outcomes of the course unit

Participation of the city population in cultural development of a given location is a current topic in Euorpean metropolises. Participation is lacking in the world. What is the reality in the Czech Republic? Are people ready to participate in the managment of the city? Do they know how to be responsible for the place where they live? Is it possible to involve the public in some decisive processes? We will discuss these topics and particpation, manners of involving the public in the decisions of the city and the importance of the community and community art.

The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with topics of local and community culture and its importance for the development of a location.

Mode of study

Students discuss and analyse key projects. Location visited, inspection of places and events, maping of public surroundings, experiental learning.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

It is required that the students in this course be aware of the urban locational significance of culture and is able to view culture as a conceptual tool of developing an urban location. A creative approach and courage are welcomed.

Course contents

  1. Local culture.
  2. Public space. Public space as a city's cultural venue, production aspects of event implmentation in public space, standards, institutions as public space.
  3. Community phenomenon. Community art, arts in communities, significance of communities.
  4. Participation.

Transparent city management, bottom-up principle, involving the public, public discussion.
