Course contents

We invite students to the „Media and Documentary 2020“ course, which thanks to the award of and international grand has been expanded to collaboration with prominent foreign film critics from Norway, Germany and the UK (more in the attachement). We believe that this new course concept will impress you:

  1. Student have the opportunity to choose if they wish to participate in only the Czech or only English part of the course, or both. It is recommended that students have a knowledge of English at the B2 level.
  2. Thursday, 29.10 is devoted to lectures by foreign instructors.
  3. The five best texts for the festival will be published online on the dokrevue.cz portaland their authors will enjoy a year's collaboration with the European documentary magazine editors of Modern Times Review. Those selected students will during the year will be awarded attendance at one foreign documentary film festival (ex: IDFA, FID Marseille, DOK Leipzig, Visions du Reel, CPH:DOX or Doc Lisboa) where they, under the guidance of an appropriate tutor, will report for Modern Times Review.

Media and Documentary 2020 - 28.10 - 1.11.2020

14th course on creative writing about documentary film

For the first time, this year, in an inovative internation format.

The Media and Documentary creative writing course is intended for students of journlism, film studies and other humanities and social studies. This year will be the 14th time within the International Documentary Film Festival Ji.hlava. This year the course is presented in a completely new format, expanded to collaboration with prominent foreign film critics. For the most successful students there is a unique opportunity to delve into the world of professional writing about documentary film. Selected students will publish their texts on the online portal dokrevue.cz and in addition will be joined in collaboration with the international magazine Modern Times Review, to which they will be able to contribute over the course of the year with their own texts under the guidance of its editors.

The first day of the course, students will have lectures by prominent Czech journalists who present various forms of critical review as well as the pitfalls and advantages of individual genres (daily newspaper reviews, professional press reviews, commentary, interviews, essays, catalog annotations) if the text covers documentary film or film festivals. The second lecture day, foreign lecturers will open up further topics of media imporessions of documentary film and give and overview of the international context of writing about film. The third day of the course, student will be able to participate in a audio-reporting workshop under the guidance of Czech Radio - Radio Wave editors.

Students then attend festival screenings and the accompanying program, meeting with directors and film professionals. They will be able to intensively monitor festival events and prepare their texts. On the final day of the festival, they will, again, meet with Czech lecturers in small groups according to the genre they have selected to analyse in detail for their texts. Those who complete the course as an elective course for their university propose and send their text to their lecturers and appropriate instructors.

Students,divided into groups for individual lecturers, discuss and analyze prepared texts.

By the 14th day after the close of the course (Monday, 16.11 at the latest) course participants submit the final versions of their texts for which the proofreader gives final feedback, and for those students who are completing part of their university studies, they also give a grade. The 5 best texts will be published on the dokrevue.cz portal and their authors will be offered collaboration with foreign editors of the Modern Times Review periodical.

If you do not have an account on our database, please, complete the basic information data and create a password. Registration will allow you further communications with the International Documentary Film Festival Ji.hlava and your account may be used in later years of the festival. After checking the given data, each participant will receive a confirmation email. The course capacity is limited so do not hesitate!

Language knowledge:

For students who wish to attend the second lecture day in English, we recommend a knowledge of English at least at the B2 level. Text translation or proofing for publication will be provided.

MFDF Ji.hlava accreditation

Students who attend the course, will hold Press/Media a dokument accreditation for the entire duration of the festival. Accreditation will also be available for pick-up at the Guest & Press center (Oblastní galerie Vysočiny, Komenského 10, Jihlava).

Accommodations and transportation

Students are responsible for their own transport to and from Jihlava. Basic accommodations will be reserved for the attendees. Precise information about accommodations will be provided during October.

Measures during the COVID-19 pandemic

During the fesitval, emphasis will be place on preventive measures (wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, disinfection, etc.). If further measure are announced by the government which would completely cancel public cultural events, MFDF Ji.hlava will take place online. In this extreme case, we have prepared a variant for the course Media and Documentary, adapted for online. Details will be given in a timely manner.

Assessment methods and criteria

100% attendance and submission of the final version of a text by 16.11. to the instructor.
