Generally the course focuses on work in the field with the use of natural light and manners of considering photography as a medium giving an voice to a location or architecture. The course is focused on photographing architecture based on an understanding of the importance of urbanism and architecture as a reflection of society. Students are guided to acquiring information on the given building, it's purpose and function which is to serve one's photographic interpretation corresponding in the quality of the selected architecture. In the practical, attention is devoted to working with large-format equipment, appropriate use of light, potential use of classical or digital technology. Part of the course is an in the field assemblies taking place as a module in selected areas.

Obsah kurzu

  1. Choice of location based on a brief presentation and discussion
  2. A deeper understanding of the chosen location by means of photographs, film, writings and

maps. Definition of the thematic viewpoint and specification of each student`s working method in relation to the given area

  1. A field-trip to the selected location. Expected duration of the trip is about 4 nights. A detailed schedule of this trip will be announced in time.
  2. Targeted work in the locality, work in small creative teams and maximum use of the given technology, materials and transportation are the main goals of the field-trip. Apart from that, a special wet-plate collodion team will be selected.
  3. Creation of a coherent, representative selection from the resulting material that can be used for the purposes of an exhibition. An evaluation of the outcome will follow.

To be submitted:

A coherent series of at least 8 photographs that characterize the given locality in a unique subjective way of each individual student. Prior to starting the project, the plan suggested by each student

shall be approved by the teachers of this subject, as hinted on in point 2.

Technical requirements:

a) black-and-white photographs must be photographed on medium-format negatives (or

larger)

b) color photographs can be photographed on a color negative, color slides or alternatively on a digital

camera upon prior agreement

c) The final output is either 8 black-and-white fiber-based photographic prints of

30 x 40 cm or 8 color inkjet prints of 30 x 40 cm. In case a specific project would require the

use of both different final formats as well as different choice of technology, such as polaroids,

wet-plate process, cyanotypes, color slides etc., should be possible upon prior consultation

and consequent approval of such a project, as hinted on in point 2.

Hodnoticí metody a kritéria

Grading: 

Exam: evaluation of all submitted assignments in which the adherence to the assignment, development, individual artistry are judged. 

Attendance: a requirement for grading is a required 80% attendance at lectures, participation in assemblies in the field, and submission of photographs at required group consultations established at the beginning of instruction.
