This course provides students with introduction into the key vocabulary areas of music management (arts management and marketing, advertising and public relations, fundraising and leadership skills, legal issues and budgeting) which they will go on to study in a more detail in the following semesters. The main focus of this semester is the 21st century music arts organization, its characteristic features and functions. In addition, students will review and practise their knowledge of basic presentation skills.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, students should be able to:
•Be familiar with and actively use key vocabulary of the main areas of music and arts management.
•List and explain the characteristics specific to music arts organizations and explain how and why the organizations need these specific functions.
•Analyze and explain the challenges that music arts organizations face in the
21st century. Explain how and why these challenges are specific to the 21st century and/or how some of the challenges still carry over from the past.
•Assemble and present a convincing case study of a music arts organisation with a focus on its structure, the way it functions and the specific challenges it faces.

Primary study materials (interactive exercises, readings etc.) will be assigned in the Moodle course https://moodle.amu.cz/course/view.php?id=605. Please note that additional texts may be assigned throughout the semester.
Hodnoticí metody a kritéria
You can score maximum of 100 points for this course. Pass mark for awarding credit is 60%.
Attendance and Participation (20 points): Attendance is mandatory and participation in class discussion is a crucial course component. Students are expected to read assigned materials prior to class meetings, ask questions, contribute to the discussion and participate. Ten points will be deducted after more than three absences.
Presentation (30 points): You will select an arts organization of your choice to study and conduct an analysis on their structure, practices, programming, and additional offerings, to be submitted via PowerPoint or Prezi and presented in front of the class. Additional information will be provided throughout the semester. The presentation should be approx. 15 minutes, followed by a Q&A session. You will be assessed on the following areas:
•Language (appropriate to audience, preparedness, sign-posting language, explanation of jargon, voice, speed, volume, clarity, intonation, grammatical accuracy, correct pronunciation of key words) 6 points
•Content (topic, coverage, sources, questions, informative / understandable / interesting / entertaining) 6 points
•Structure (logical sequence – outline (key points), purpose statement, introduction, main points, summary, conclusion, closing, timing) 6 points
•Body language (eye contact, good use of notes, not reading large parts of the presentation, stance, enthusiasm) 6 points
•Visuals (appropriate, supportive, clear, good quality graphics) 6 points
Two Quizzes (10 points each): There will be two brief quizzes on course materials during the semester. Additional information will be provided prior to these quizzes.
Final Exam (30 points): A comprehensive final examination will be administered during the exam period (January 2021). It will be based on information for class discussions and course readings. Additional information regarding the final exam will be given later in the semester.
Grading: Pass /Fail.
•A = 100-90%
•B = 89-80%
•C = 79-73%
•D = 72-66%
•E = 65-60%
•F = 59% and less
