Learning outcomes of the course unit

After completing the course, students are acquainted in detail with the life and work of Jiří Kylián and his personality is firmly anchored in the context of general historical development as well as in the context of the development of world choreography in the last third of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st century. The first part of this course prepares students factually for the second part, in which they will engage in a deeper analysis of the various stages and aspects of Kylián's work.

Course contents

Learning objective:

To provide students with a detailed knowledge of the artistic life and work of one of the most important contemporary choreographers, Jiří Kylián, to place his work in the context of the times, to illuminate the development of his work against the background of cultural, aesthetic, social and political changes at different stages of historical development in Europe, and to compare his way of choreographic composition with his contemporaries, again at different stages of the development of his work.

The course not only provides students with historical information, but also develops their ability to analytically interpret choreographic work.

Thematic areas:

  1. Early years: family background of Jiří Kylián, dance career of Jiří Kylián's mother, Markéta.
  2. Czechoslovakia between 1960-1968, studies at the Prague Conservatoire, dancing in the University Artistic Ensemble and the personalities of the teachers (Frank Towen, Zora Šemberová, František Pokorný), studies at the Royal Ballet Academy in London.
  3. Dance career and choreographic beginnings.
  4. The history and repertoire of the Nederland Dans Theater until the arrival of Jiří Kylián
  5. The history and repertoire of Nederlands Dans Theater under the leadership of Jiří Kylián (dramaturgical profile, the gradual emergence of NDT2 and NDT3, choreographic workshops, other choreographic personalities invited by Kylián to collaborate)
  6. Chronological development of Jiří Kylián's choreographic work between 1975-2006
  7. Chronological development of Jiří Kylián's work from 2006 to the present
