  1. Ex Oriente Film workshop: Market, her I am!

The lectures of the third meeting of the Ex Oriente Film workshop offer practical case studies of distribution, production and marketing strategies and a director's masterclass.

Ex Oriente Film open program

Friday, March 25 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Screening: Filmmaker's House (director: Marc Isaacs, Great Britain, 2020, 75 ')

Serial killers or anything related to sex. These are topics that producer Marc Isaacs should focus on if he wants to have a chance to get funding. A frustrated and unyielding documentary filmmaker decides to make a film about the people around him and with them: the workers building a new fence in his garden, a Pakistani neighbor, a homeless man from Slovakia, whom he takes on temporarily, and his Colombian housekeeper, who has just lost her mother. . The film begins as a classic documentary, but the viewer gradually gets the feeling that he is watching the script. The theme of hospitality - current and important, but not spectacular - will end up with an unexpected turn that will turn the whole film upside down. Isaacs thus criticizes the predictability of commercial documents; in contrast to the trend of adapting facts to media formats, it presents fiction that is governed by authenticity. It shows how complicated authorship can be - and that it creates quality.

Saturday, March 26, 10: 00-11: 30

Marc Issacs' Masterclass: The Art of Provocation

Marc Isaacs will talk about the importance of provocation in his filmmaking process on the examples of concrete examples from his work. Asking what a documentary is and can be, it will show how its ideas are created and developed and how film images are created. Isaacs invites us to think about the balance between intervention and chance and explores how to plan for spontaneity. When and why is it necessary to stage reality and how to avoid predictability in our filmmaking efforts?

Saturday, March 26, 5:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Production lecture by Siniša Juričić (Nukleus Film, Croatia)

Production lecture by Siniša Juričić, acclaimed producer and founder of Nukleus Film. Siniša Juričić is the producer and co-producer of many feature and documentary films, such as Sofia's Last Ambulance (Visionary Award France 4, screened at the 51st Cannes Film Festival as part of Critics 'Week, co-producer of Peter Kerekes' Velvet Terrorists (2013), which won the Audience Award at The animated documentary Chris the Swiss (directed by Anja Kofmel) premiered at Cannes Critics' Week in 2018. He is a member of the European Film Academy and the EAVE, ACE and Inside Pictures production networks. Siniša Juričić is also a fixture in co-production and pitching forums.

Saturday, March 26, 7: 00-20: 30 p.m.

Screening: 1970 (dir. Tomasz Wolski, prod. Anna Gawlita - Kijora Film, Poland, 2021, 71 ')

When protests erupted in communist Poland in late 1970, a crisis staff met in Warsaw. Shortly afterwards, the militia used its batons. The shots were fired. Through archival recordings and animations, viewers can observe various mechanisms of power. The 1970 film is a story about a rebellion, told from the perspective of the oppressors.

Sunday, March 27 9: 30-11: 00

Lecture by Mikael Opstrup (Denmark): Documentary film - the only art form outside the control of its own creators.

The title of the lecture is a quote from Mikael Opstrup's recently published book The Uncertainty - A book about Developing Character driven Documentary. In her lecture, Mikael will address this and other issues from her book, touches on the differences between events and stories, the presentation of a film that does not yet exist, and what it means that a „pitch trailer“ is not a separate work. The lecture will focus on pitching projects and related branches to various elements of documentary production in general.

Sunday 27 March 17: 00-18: 30

Dialogue by Tomasz Wolský and Anna Gawlita: Be a documentary filmmaker and survive.

The films can be made with three trucks of light, the best technology, with a dozen or more people and several assistants. However, they can be filmed with a minimal team, for example with only two people. Is it possible to work and survive in the film industry in this way? Will the quality of the film not suffer? How to succeed in several roles at the same time? Is it possible to do things differently and what are the advantages and disadvantages? They will work together on the examples of their films (producer Anna Gawlita and director Tomasz Wolsky, who collaborated on the documentaries Festival, Horse Riders, Common Country and 1970). On the example of the 1970 film, they will share how and why historical film appeared in their filmography.

Monday, March 28 10: 00-11: 00

Keynote: Esther van Messel: Loving the audience

Loving an audience can mean many things and I think you need to talk about them all. Creators who work in storytelling need an audience that will make them listen to them. No letter is meant to be unread, no picture is drawn to be seen, no joke is told so that no one can laugh at it. We, who make a living from storytelling, make sure that the stories are well-told and visible. So shouldn't we be more interested in viewers and listeners of our stories? Of course yes. From historical recordings of life in caves to advertising breaks on television - these are all stories we tell. Even here this moment here, This is also a story. Everyone offers something, everyone gains something and we all tell a story all the time. Today's one is about the audience and how we love them.

Monday, March 28 14: 00-15: 30

Case Study: Too Close (2022) - From film development to distribution

Documentary training workshops and European documentary funding funds are an essential part of the strategy of Central and Eastern European producers, especially in the production of politically engaged films dealing with human rights, economic, geopolitical, cultural, ethical and / or social issues. In a joint case study of two international educational workshops Ex Oriente Film (Ivana Pauerová Miloševičová) and doc. sp. Irina Irina Malcea participated in the Ex Oriente Film workshop in 2020, the doc.incubator workshop subsequently in 2021 and received financial support from the Docs Up Fund. The discussion will focus on the importance of educational workshops and funds for the production of authorial projects in the current climate of the documentary industry.
