Learning outcomes of the course unit

By mastering a larger range of historical procedures, the student will gain greater opportunities in the alternative processing of their creative projects.

Mode of study

Intensive multi-day block teaching is expected.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

The schedule of the workshop can be formulated in general (partial differences are always given by the given photographic technique) as follows:

Historical and technical contexts of the origin and possibilities of the technology, its specifics and modifications

Preparation and testing of photographic materials

Preparing for photography

Preparation of the photo chamber and studio, own photography and material processing

Finishing, evaluation of results

In this case, the teaching will take place in blocks and the individual stages will follow each other smoothly

Course contents

In recent years, historical photographic techniques have become the focus of alternative photographic techniques.

The saline process is the first copying process based on the sensitivity of silver halides to light. A suitable paper is impregnated with a silver nitrate solution and then immersed in a potassium iodide solution. Each of the layers is applied after the previous one has dried. Sensitization is carried out by smearing with a solution of silver nitrate with gallic acid and wet, as in the wet collodion process. It is developed in a solution of silver nitrate in gallic acid. A negative is created on the paper substrate, which then becomes transparent with wax and thus creates a negative with sufficient transparency to make additional positive copies.

Assessment methods and criteria

Accuracy and precision in the preparation of the whole process and an active approach in finding suitable shots and their implementation are evaluated.
