Prerequisites and co-requisites

Basic knowledge of European history, awareness of WWI and WWII, familiarity with the history of the region since WWII. We will start the course with a short recap anyway.

Course contents

Students with the teacher’s guidance reveal the essence of the famous city and the culture that has formed it over the centuries to this day. They will leave the beaten daily paths to explore the urban jungle textbook of modern times in Central Europe. Gothic Prague, Renaissance Prague, Baroque Prague, Prague that tore down its walls to give rise to new settlements and finally Prague so remote that its inhabitants journey to see Charles Bridge.

From the structure of the city we move on to its particularities - houses, parks, events and suburbs, often neglected and falling apart.

Within one semester (two in total if students attend both the autumn and spring term courses) students may try to read the city and its structure to grasp the historical and social background of it as well as discover important artists/galleries.

Getting to know Prague in its variability helps students with location scouting for one's project.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students are asked to take photographs during our tours and prepare a final visual-textual report on either one tour or the one semester of tours. Final reports are expected to be sent via e-mail to jitka.hejtmanova@famu.cz in ideally .pdf version or as downloadable web link. (I keep your works).

Your covering of our tours (photography) will be slightly mentored by me, not to change your approach, but for getting more from your images. I hope for achieving an individual and unique final visual report from all of you, even those not trained in visual arts.

Please be aware of the final size of the files sent!

Cell phone pics are just enough, don’t worry.

The final assignment will be discussed thorough the course, so don’t worry.

Delivery date is Dec 22, 2021

Note

Please get ready for a healthy dose of walking in any weather.

Have some money on you. We will need some refreshments.
