Learning outcomes of the course unit

This course is tailored to International students of various linguistic and cultural backgrounds, studying film and/or Photography at FAMU. The course develops the knowledge of Czech pronunciation and speaking, reading, listening and writing in Czech, that was gained during the first academic year of studying Czech. The course begins on the level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The outcome of the course is active knowledge of A2 level (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing) and passive knowledge of B1 level.

Successful completion of the level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Course contents

Successful completion of the level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Czech pronunciation; Developing of Czech prosody: intonation, tone, stress, and rhythm.

Verbs: Future tense of být and imperfectives; Future tense of jít and jet; Perfectives and expressing of tense; Prefixes při-, od- with the verbs jít, jet; Further verbal prefixes; Determinate – Indeterminate verbs; Verbal aspect: Perfective – Imperfective pairs; Signal words for the usage of verbal aspect; Reflexive verbs and the function of “se” word; Conditional mood (Kdyby, Aby); Imperative mood; Passive participles

Nouns, Adjectives, Pronouns: The concept of cases: Developing of the knowledge of Accusative, Genitive, Locative and Instrumental singular, Dative singular; Genitive and Accusative plural.

Prepositions, Adverbs: Further developing of the knowledge of Prepositions and cases; Adverbs of time in connection with Verbal aspect

Word order; Position of clitics in Conditional mood; Argument structure

Vocabulary: Development of film-related terminology and phrases and idioms used set; Vocabulary for A2 level according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;

Topics: People, their appearance and characterization; Creative activities; Famous Czech filmmakers, Famous people in Czech culture; Czech theatre and music; Prague culture institutions; Our plans, dreams, visions; Lifestyle; Environment; Motion and travelling; Czech mythology; Customs, superstition; Czech folk tales; Czech poetry

Class participation, homework – 50%

Vocabulary and grammar quizzes – 10%
