Programme objectives

The programme develops stagecraft talents with a focus on dramaturgy and directing, offering a wide range of creative resources with emphasis on teamwork in the creation of a stage production. Programme graduates are eligible for admission to Master’s programmes in directing or dramaturgy of dramatic theatre, and will obtain a qualification for professional work in a theatre, TV and radio, as well as other cultural institutions.

Profile of a programme graduate

A graduate of the Bachelor’s programme in Direction-Dramaturgy of Dramatic Theatre is a versatile expert who:

• demonstrates broad knowledge of the history, theory and practice of theatrical arts with emphasis on the tradition of European and Czech dramatic arts, and is well-oriented in the basic primary and secondary scholarly literature;
• actively, independently and successfully executes practical dramaturgical and directing tasks with a focus on managing the preparation and realisation of a specific staging form and always with appropriate theoretical reflection; in so doing applies expert knowledge and the basic methods of the professional field;
• is thus able to (co)create a staging form of a lesser extent (a staging in the extent of a one-act play) while demonstrating his/her management and teamwork skills;
• is proficient in at least one foreign language (English) at the level set by CEFR;
• is able to develop his/her artistic abilities in a Master’s programme, or can engage straightaway in activities connected with dramatic arts and related audio-visual activities at an appropriate professional level, i.e. enter practice and apply his/her skills as a lecturer in dramaturgy, assistant director, editor, or work in theatre or other media in the area of PR, in the production and management sphere, etc.

General information about admission process

Applicants must successfully pass a three-round entrance examination which examines demonstrable talent prerequisites:

1st round – eliminative: a written test focusing on general and cultural knowledge, an essay on an assigned theme according to a selection from among several topics, and a language test

2nd round – eliminative: an interview before the admissions committee consisting of a discussion on a presented written work and individual exercises examining the applicant’s talent and personality prerequisites (ability to perceive a dramatic situation, empathetic ability, inventive ability, etc.)

3rd round – individual: tasks examining the applicant’s sense for a theatrical situation, ability to find and interpret it in a dramatic text, or to organise it in space; the specific assignments of the tasks are included in the invitation to the entrance examinations

Point system for assessing success

In the first round, the maximum possible number of points is 250, of which at most 50 are from the language test, at most 50 are from the knowledge test, at most 50 are from the essay, and at most 100 are from the homework assignment. With regard to the evaluation of the homework assignment, particular emphasis is placed on the applicant’s ability to analyse a dramatic text which the applicant selects from among several suggested titles. Other factors include the applicant’s level of logical reasoning, understanding of the deeper meaning of the sample, theatrical imagination, fantasy and dramatic sentiment. The essay is evaluated according to the applicant’s ability to formulate and defend an opinion in the broader context, as well as the ability to reason independently. The knowledge test is evaluated according to the scope of applicant’s overall cultural-historical knowledge, and to his/her deeper interest in theatre and art. The language test is evaluated according to the applicant’s ability to understand the deeper sense of a foreign-language text.

In the second round (interview with the admissions committee), the maximum possible number of points is 100. The applicant will defend his/her homework assignment, and the committee will examine and evaluate the applicant’s sense for opening a dramatic situation, creativity, fantasy, inventive ability and communicativeness using tests (on the basis of photography, reproduction of an artwork, poem and rejoinders to a potential dialogue).

In the third round (individual exercise), the maximum possible number of points is 100. The examination is focused on exploring the applicant’s deeper talent prerequisites. It is evaluated based on the applicant’s ability to create a dramatic situation in space, the originality of the applicant’s approach and his/her ability to interpret reality through artistic means.
