This cycle of lectures aims to familiarize students of theatre scenography at Based on DAMU and students of the camera, directing, and production courses at FAMU with film set design and the profession of a film set designer. The first lectures are devoted to the history of film set design and the technical development of this field. Lecturers are explaining structure of Art department and their workload during the preparation and shooting of a film. This is followed by lectures devoted to the typology of film sets and the different requirements for their realization both from the artistic and technical points of view. At least two lectures are devoted to a brief overview of the development of architecture and material culture and the influence of these disciplines on the work of the film production designer. The lecturer will introduce the audience to how the various artistic and technical professions in a film crew collaborate and how their work influences each other. One of the lectures is devoted to special effects in film and the collaboration between the film set designer and the special effects supervisor and then with the visual effects supervisor. Each lecture is supplemented not only with photographs of set designs but also with examples from films by Czech and international filmmakers.
Learning outcomes
Based on these lectures students of DAMU, but also students of film directing, camera and production will get a general knowledge of the profesion of production design. They will better understand the position of this profession withing the film crew. They will understand the need of professional comunication with various creative proffesion within the film crew.
