For a long time now, I have been trying to figure out how to re-present the personality and work of the pedagogue of the Department of Documentary Production at FAMU, prof. Karel Vachek. Last year's happening at the time of the one-year anniversary of his death (joint pilgrimage of a group of students and Vachka's friends from school to his apartment in the Suchy vršek housing estate and back again see https://kdt.famu.cz/vzpominka-na-karla-vachka/ + banner hanging for the school with his quote were fine, but it needs something more permanent. I thought of starting a tradition that will be connected with the date of his departure/transition on 12/21, but the end of the year allows for social reflection. The annual event „Vachek Confrontation“ would always consisted of three parts - I am now introducing the film, the theme and the guests for the first year:
1st block – projection of a 35mm copy of the film „Elective Affinities“ (1968, 85'): Martin Švoma will prepare an introduction before the film, which will put the audience into context and introduce the theme/characters, and will lead a subsequent debate with the guests focused on film studies of the past-present; in the FAMU Studio Reference Screening 3-6:20 p.m. (for longer films, this part will start earlier)
15:00-15:20 introduction 20'
15:20-16:45 film 85'
16:50-18:20 debate 7 guests 90': film historian and director of NFA Michal Bregant, director Jan Gogola Jr., editor of Vachek´s collected works Miloš Kameník, film producer Radim Procházka, historians Michal Stehlík and Martin Groman, authors of the podcast „Rewrite History“ and director Helena Všetečková
2nd block - debate on the current topic that interferes with the film today: „the presidential election and the escalation of the political situation, or has representative democracy come to an end?“ (in a year or so it may be different focuses): Petr Fischer will moderate the debate focused on the present-future with guests who, in the spirit of Vachek's „Open Seminar“, will be approached from a wide spectrum of non-film subjects - political scientist, historian, psychologist, philosopher, economist, biologist, etc.); in the Reference Projection of the FAMU Studio 18:30-20:30 debate 8 guests 90': spokesperson for movements Fridays for Future movement Klára Bělíčková, software developer and member of association Transparent Lenka Králová, writer Eda Kriseová, journalist Jakub Patočka, philosopher Miroslav Petříček, political scientist and left-wing anarchist Ondřej Slačálek, signatory of Charter 77 and knight of the Legion of Honor Anna Šabatová, columnist and translator Petruška Šustrová
3rd block – djing of Vachek's LP gramophone records and free debate of the participants with refreshments: 20:30-22:30 at Club FAMU (Mr. Vachek Jr. agreed to lend the records)
