Contents

Acting practice with a mask is very closely related to an animator with a puppet, inanimate object and in the same sense a drawn figure. The course involves the nature of this manner of acting. The internal feelings of the figure in a drama theatre manner enables the student to better understand the psychological procedures of the actor in creating a character and using it in their own work with a puppet or other inanimate object in animated film.

Each student works in the first phase with individual types of expressive masks from larval to character. Then, each models their own original type of mask in a cast of their own face. They are introduced to the entire procedure of mask production and the nature of the human face and mimic expressions.

Fixing one expression on the mask and its animation with their own body guides the student to an understanding of the principles of puppet and inanimate object animation both in the theatre and on film.

Activity plan depends on the instructor and instruction method:

Study of types of masks according to acting techniques:

Neutral, character, expressive and dynamic.

Classification according to production technology and mask function:

Character masks:

Whole face masks

Half-masks - covering only part of the face.

Expressive masks covering the whole body.

Static and dynamic masks (ex: painted or recorded)

Artistic creation - mask modeling and laminating:

Larval

Expressive half-mask

Expressive face whole-mask

Surface treatment - patinating, coloring

Interpretation of individual masks:

Perceiving the content and form of a mask, respecting the materal and and from this stand finding a manner of managing the mask. Establish and act a situation with a mask.
