Programme objectives

The aim of the Bachelor’s programme in Music Management is to prepare independent decision-making experts for work in music management who will be sufficiently knowledgeable to be able to function successfully in all three spheres of music operations – the public sphere, the civic sphere and the private sphere. At the same time, they will be able to combine high artistic demands with the ability to manage the economic and legal aspects of music operations.

Profile of a programme graduate

The programme graduate is equipped with a high level of language proficiency in two world languages, and is able to organise musical life and operations in institutions such as orchestras, opera houses, festivals, and chamber ensembles. He or she can also apply these skills in traditional media such as radio and television, and in the music industry (publishing houses and agencies of various types) – even in a digitising society.

Specialist knowledge

The graduate is familiar with the basic facts of music history and music theory, including the fundamentals of analysis and music criticism.

The graduate is thoroughly acquainted with the legislation of the Czech Republic and the EU, and is familiar with the rules and functioning of copyright law in the Czech Republic and the EU, as well as its differences from copyright law in the Anglo-Saxon area.

The graduate is familiar with inherent economic laws in the field of microeconomics, and with the basic rules of marketing and the functioning of a market society.

The graduate has expertise in psychology and sociology.

Specialist skills

The graduate is highly proficient in English and is proficient in one other world language of their choice (German, French, Spanish or Italian). He or she makes use of this knowledge to communicate with foreign partners, especially when formulating contracts and offers or when negotiating tours.

The graduate applies his or her music-theoretical knowledge to the creation or correction of dramaturgical plans and individual projects, either as an author, a collaborator or a reviewer.

The graduate will assess the basic validity of most legal (contractual) acts in the field of music and will be able to apply his or her knowledge of copyright law in cooperation with composers, arrangers, lyricists, users of a musical work, or institutions which use copyrighted works, including public and private media.

The graduate possesses communication skills and can use them adequately.

General competencies

A programme graduate is qualified to work in all types of music or cultural institutions as a stage manager, producer, executive producer, line producer, editor, dramaturg, etc. The graduate is competent to submit and present his or her own business plan and to establish a commercial entity such as self-employment or a limited liability company.

He or she is competent to elaborate grant applications at the national level, and to prepare business models and business plans for start-up enterprises pursuant to the valid norms and customs of the Czech Republic. He or she is able to hold leading positions in middle management, and is competent to become a high-quality and educated civil servant.

General information about admission process

Round 1: A written examination

  1. An examination on English at the B1 level and on another world language (German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, French) at the A1-A2 level, in the form of a written test
  2. An examination on general knowledge in the areas of art, literature, the history of music, realia of the art of music, repertoire, culture and musical life in the Czech Republic and abroad, in the form of a written test
  3. A listening test on general knowledge of works of Czech and world music repertoire in the form of audio samples and written answers

After the completion of Round 1, the admissions committee shall assess the scores of the individual applicants and shall recommend for admission those applicants who earned the required number of points.

If the required number of points is not earned, then the admissions proceeding shall conclude.

If the applicant advances to Round 2, then the points from Round 1 shall not be counted.

Round 2: An oral examination and interview

  1. An examination on the fundamentals of music theory, i.e. basic terms and phenomena in the areas harmony, counterpoint and instrumentation
  2. An examination on the history of Czech and world music since 1600
  3. An examination on current realia of Czech and European music life
  4. An interview assessing applicants’ ability to work in the area of music management, their psychological aptitudes, resilience and envisaged future path, if admitted

The admissions committee shall assess the applicant with an overall score. The assessment will take into account, for example, knowledge of the history of music; realia of the art of music; knowledge of the repertoire, culture and musical life in the Czech Republic and abroad; knowledge of Czech authors and the main personalities of European music; knowledge of music-historical facts in context; the ability to concisely describe the contributions of individual composers and or musical trends; knowledge of music organisations, institutions, festivals, agencies and music production companies, as well as artistic personalities of Czech and European musical life, etc.

After the completion of Round 2, the admissions committee shall rank individual applicants according to their average scores and shall recommend for admission those applicants who ranked within the admissions target and who earned the minimum score for the Music Management programme of study.

The requirements of the admissions proceeding, including a designation of the method by which points are awarded, their range and the admissions target, are defined for each academic year by a relevant Decree of the Dean, which is subject to approval by the academic senate of the faculty.

If not enough applicants receive the required number of points, the admissions target will not be met.
