Learning objectives:

The study is mainly aimed at promoting the formation of students' individuality, the formation of a distinctive artistic style and opinions. Emphasis is placed on understanding the current situation of the field and one's own position within it, on deepening compositional and technical skills, and creating an orientation within the field of contemporary music and in the general cultural field. The course develops the ability to think independently and conceptually clearly in music composition and teaches how to formulate one's own musical ideas into performable and intelligible notation and sound form.

Thematic areas:

The focus of work in the second year of the programme is the preparation of the Master‘s graduate composition and the written thesis. A graduate Master's composition in its difficulty and scope (approximately 15-20 minutes) corresponds to a substantial composition for symphony orchestra. However, it may also be a different score, e.g. a major work for a large chamber ensemble, a concertante work, a work with a vocal component, a work supported by digital technology etc., or a set of such works. The specific assignment, compositional technique, score, and other specifics are determined by the department on an individual basis, taking into account the student's focus. It is assumed that the two diploma assignments (composition and thesis) are linked in content. The course develops the ability to think independently and conceptually clearly in music composition and teaches how to formulate one's own musical ideas into performable and intelligible notation and sound form. Emphasis is also placed on the student's ability to comment knowledgeably on professional issues and on the ability to articulate his or her creative aesthetics and theoretical-compositional conclusions in writing and orally.

Learning outcomes

The student (according to his/her previous achievement and aesthetic focus) shows demonstrable progress in the development of their compositional thinking. He/she is better able to formulate their own musical ideas in a distinctive and persuasive way into performable, intelligible notation and sound forms. The student is able to comment knowledgeably on professional issues and to articulate their creative aesthetic and theoretical-compositional conclusions in writing and orally, particularly in relation to the topic of their thesis.

Literature

Scores and recordings of contemporary music, especially available new works.

Study of scores and recordings of major works of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Current articles and reviews relating to contemporary compositional issues, recent premieres and major performances of contemporary music.

Literature related to the thesis.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The prerequisite is the completion of all assigned composition tasks, which the student will demonstrate at regular semester examinations and through a public presentation of his/her own compositions at department concerts or other performances. Preparation of Master's thesis assignments is also assessed.

The main criterion is the artistic and compositional technical level of the submitted compositions. Additional criteria include the graphic realisation and informative level of the submitted scores.

Other requirements: Participation in events organised by the department, especially concerts and other performances. Consistent interest in contemporary music and active search for new knowledge.
