The presentation of the history of dance music is defind in the area of folk dance, social dances and theatre dancing. Attention is devoted to their particular characteristics arising from the aims and function of the music in these types of dance. The theory presentation is supplemented with listenings of music example and an analysisof notation.
The chronology presentation begins in European antiquity and contines through Medieval music and the first preserved music recording of the dances Estampida and Saltarello, dance songs and Troubador culture, accompanying music issues and iconography is used in this.
The Renaissance presentation focuses on the musical characteristics of individual dance forms which formed this period. Particular attention is devoted to some composers (M. Praetorius), J. Dowland) and music collections (Terpsichore). Music of selected balle de cour (Ballet comique de la reine) performances are studied.
In the Baroque the presentation continues along with individual music-dance forms. Particular attention is devoted to the Baroque suite and dance music issues in particular for dance and the concert dance form. The works of J.B. Lully and other Ballet de cour composers is studied in detail.
Learning outcomes
This course develops knowledge of the history of music. It covers the particulars of dance music, its nature and historical development in the European context.
Prerequisites and other requirements
This course requires completion of Music History and Theory and Score Analysis. The ability to read scores is necessary. Music education and experience is advantageous.
