Documentary
Directing students write and direct short film up to 15 minutes-based documentary topic. Students are led in their tutorial workshops to develop a topical documentary based on true characters or events. There is no style limit, except for avoiding only poetical creation. No matter which way, but the topicality should be a clear part of the film – either the topic exposes personal and/or social issues. The artistic initiative comes from Directing student who actively searches for collaborating Cinematography student.
Atelier exercise
Students adapt the assigned script for the realization of the pre-defined set built in film studio. Students analyse the script, seek a creative interpretation of its meaning, and finds a way for conveying it using the tools of the audiovisual expression.
Learning outcomes
With this exercise students will:
Documentary
- Explore different possible themes for documentary filmmaking and analyse the potential of these ideas for realization.
- Recognize the progressive phases of a documentary director’s work.
Atelier exercise
- Learn how to interpret the existing dramatic text by the process of its visualization.
- Will understand how it is possible to find own creative voice in the adaptation of the existing dramatic text.
- Learn to work within the limits set by existing scripts.
- Practice the work on the film studio set.
Prerequisites and other requirements
Directing student must present the project at pitching and submit the director's treatment 3 days before the pitching (the director's treatment must include the essential members of the crew - DoP and camera crew, production manager, set designer, sound designer).

Evaluation methods and criteria
Public screening: the student receives feedback from the teacher's committee. The grade is given by the subject teacher (mentor).
Atelier exercise
Overall artistic success is evaluated with an emphasis on:
- Audiovisual interpretation of the script.
- Casting and directing actors.
Documentary project
Overall artistic success is evaluated with an emphasis on:
- Choice of the topic.
- Use of the film language and tools of documentary filmmaking.
The student's failure to comply with the requirements and/or parameters of the exercise (project) may result in a lowering of the grade.
Note
- Directing student is responsible for finding the essential crew members.
- Technical parameters of Atelier exercise: The equipment list is given by the production sheet (“White Book”) of the exercise. Students must choose from the shooting dates pre-selected by the Studio FAMU production office.
- Technical parameters of Documentary project: the camera, light and grip list must be created according to the script and location possibilities and must be approved by cinematography mentor of CINKK student and FAMU International production office. Digital technology is not subject to a change.
