Complete introduction to small-scale production sound techniques:
- using and understanding the digital recorder
- selecting and using the various microphones
- boom technique
- on-set sync dialogue and ambient recording
- field recording for location sound and ambient sound
We will also discuss the sound recordist's role and responsibilities on set, understanding the script from a sound perspective, and communicating with the director and the rest of the crew.
Learning outcomes
Ability to record basic professional-level production film sound. Students will work directly on film sets of APP directors (and possibly other FAMU programs).

No previous recording experience required.

Evaluation methods and criteria
Each student will be required to record sound on-set for one FAMU/APP student film.
Note
In addition, each student can sit in and observe one final mixing session each semester from the film(s) they have recorded.
