Synopsis:

The inspiration of anthroplogical theatre, postmodernity and new cultural identity.

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of theatre history.

Study Objectives:

l. Familiarising students with all the important forms of traditional Asian, African and Latin-American theatre, with the emphasis on their ability to inspire and their practical application in contemporary drama.

2. A look at the historical context of traditional theatre and 20th Century reforms.

3. The spiritual values of non-European regions and their influence on artistic aesthetics.

4. Total dramatic forms and the structure of traditional anthropolgical theatre.

5. The actor (movement and mask in a space), the stage, object and symbol, text and music:

principles of the dramatic forms of total theatre.

Teaching method:

Interactive lectures with video documentation are regularly accompanied by an interpretation of how these forms are applied in a European and Czech theatrical context (lst and 2nd theatre reforms: Craig, Yeats, Artaud, Brecht, Mejerchold, Brook, Barba, Grotowski, Kantor-Szajna, happening, Schumann).

The interactive seminar is held alongside the presentation and analysis of regional dramatic forms, with an emphasis on understanding the principles of anthropological and total theatre. At the end of the 2nd semester there is a possibility of a practical workshop if students express a wish for one.

l. Introduction: 20th Century reforms, their purpose and the inspiration of oriental theatre.

2. Historical comparison: Oriental theatre, Antiquity (the Stage and the Mask, Text)

Medieval theatre, Elizabethan theatre - Lully Commedia del Arte - Folk theatre.

3. Regional forms of Asian classical and folk theatre

Japan:

- ritual and court dance in masks: Kagura, Gagaku and Bugaku

- Divadlo NÓ (inspiration - Craig, Yeats, Brecht, Brook, Barba, Living Theatre)

- Kabuki (Mejerchold, Tairov) and BUNRAKU, puppet theatre

- Butó dance, MinTanaka

India:

- Kathakali and Jakšagana (inspiration - Grotowski, Barba, Brook)

China and Taiwan:

- Chines opera (Brecht, Eisenstein, Mejerchold)

Indonesia:

- puppet Wayang and dances in masks from Java

- Barong and Kecak - Hindu dances in masks from Bali (ARTAUD)

Thailand, Laos and Cambodia:

- Ramajana dance drama in masks following the Wayand puppet model

Vietnam:

Tuong classical opera, folk Cheo and water puppet theatre

Philipines:

- Catholic Passion in masks - Cenakulos

- Muslim moro-moro plays

4. Africa - rhythm, dance and mask (P.Brook). Soyinka and African drama.

5. Latin America - African influences on dance, ceremonies and folk theatre (A. Boal).
