bachelor's programme qualification

Specific admission requirements:

Considerable conducting talent, interpretative skills, developed musical ear, extemporaneous playing ability on the piano, mastery of manual conducting techniques, general cultural knowledge.

Entrance examination:

1) a practical aptitude test:

a) conducting from the piano: one complete symphony by W. A. Mozart (nos. 39, 40, 41) or L. van Beethoven (nos.1-8) of the candidate´s choice

b) conducting from the piano: one complete symphony by A. Dvořák (nos. 5-9) or P. I. Tchaikovsky (nos. 4, 5, 6) of the candidate´s choice

c) conducting recitatives from the first act of B. Smetana´s opera „The Bartered Bride“

d) arehearsal conducting a chamber ensemble (e.g. a string quartet);the score will be given to the candidate one half hour before the examination

e) an interpretive performance on an instrument of the candidate´s choice (may be waived)

f) a piano performance (may be waived) at this level:

- three etudes of the candidate´s choice from among the following compositions: Clementi-Taussig,Gradusad Parnassum; C. Czerny Op.740 The Art of Finger Dexterity; J. B. Crammer, selection from among 60 etudes, etc.

- one Baroque composition of the candidate´s choice on the level of the following compositions:J. S. Bach, Two and Three-Part Inventions, French Suites, The Well-Tempered Clavier, etc.

2) a written test:

aural dictation (notation of one to four parts)

3) an oral test:

a) a formal and content analysis of the symphony which the candidate conducted from the piano

b) a benchmark examination of the candidate´s scope of knowledge of operatic and symphonic literature

c) a benchmark examination of the candidate´s knowledge of general cultural history

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning:

The programme does not have any specific requirements for the recognition of prior learning. The procedure for recognition at AMU is governed by Articles 89 and 90 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 111/1998 Coll., as amended, and by the AMU Attendance and Examination Regulations (Articles 8, 14, 18).

Qualification requirements and regulations

A completed secondary or a completed secondary vocational education; exceptionally, it is also possible to admit candidates without a completed secondary, a completed secondary vocational or higher vocational education at a conservatory.

Regulations:The Czech education system is governed by the Act on Higher Education Institutions, as amended (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.), and by the internal regulations of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Field of study characterization

The goal of the programme is to master the basic issues of the conducting profession, to acquire practical experience working with musical ensembles and to conduct a choir and orchestra also in connection with the requirements of modern creative methods.

Key learning outcomes:

Orientation in the interpretation of modern and traditional composing styles including component disciplines.The ability to independently interpret a musical work meeting the requirements of an autonomous musical creation. Mastery of the fundamentals and common work with chamber and symphonic bodies.

Orientation in musical and cultural operations and the ability to participate actively in them.Ability to formulate arguments in theoretical and creative discussions about composition on a professional level.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

A graduate of the Bachelor´s Programme is capable of independently interpreting a musical work meeting the requirements of an autonomous musical form;is oriented in the historical and contemporary directions of musical creation and reacts to them in a creative manner;is oriented in musical and cultural operations and is capable of participating actively in them;is capable of formulating arguments in theoretical and creative discussions on a professional level.

Access to further studies:

After duly completing the Bachelor?s programme it is possible for the student to continue his or her studies in the Master?s programme.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading:

Studies are assessed by credits and examinations stipulated by study plans.The student is informed of these through the information system.The student registers for examinations using the information system, and is entitled to a second and third attempt to pass an examination.If neither of these attempts proves successful, the Dean may in exceptional cases permit a fourth attempt (administered by a commission).It is not permitted to repeat an examination for the main subjects or to repeat written examinations.The credit is an ungraded form of assessment of studies.It is allocated upon fulfilment of requirements stipulated for individual subjects and is recorded in the information system with the word „Credited“ (Z).An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subject.In the main subjects, examinations are administered by a commission.Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“.

Graduation requirements:

Studies in this programme are duly completed with the state final examination.This examination is held before an examination committee comprised of the faculty?s professors, assistant professors and expert assistants, or of invited experts approved by the faculty?s artistic council.The state final examination and announcement of the results are public.

The student must sit for a state final examination no later than two academic years after fulfilling the study obligations of the relevant study plan.A student who has fulfilled the conditions for the relevant study plan, performed a Bachelor?s concert, submitted a qualifying thesis with all the required formalities and obtained the required number of credits may register for the state final examination.The examination includes an oral defence of the Bachelor?s thesis.The Dean stipulates the contents of the state final examination for individual fields of study on the basis of the recommendation of the relevant department.

State final examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“.The examination committee shall decide the overall assessment for the state final examination by vote in camera
