Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Study aims:

1. Introduction to the beginnings and forms of puppet theatre.

2. Perception of puppets as a distinct means of artistic expression.

3. Introduction to new tendencies and potential of contemporary world puppet theatre.

4. Linking historical, theory and technological materials regarding the puppet theatre phenomenon.

Mode of study:

Lecture, classes, discussion, media recording analysis, screenings.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

1. General knowledge of fundamental theatrological studies regarding puppet theatre.

2. Analytical and review skills. Working with (also foreign language) materials.

Course contents:

The history of puppet theatre is understood in the context of all theatre and in relation to drama literature and graphic arts (set design) with an emphasis on the specific features of this type of theatre.

Curriculum:

1. Beginnings of puppet theatre, its characteristics and forms.

2. Relation of traditional puppet theatre and its present types.

3. The puppet as a expression tool in the a writer's and playwright's work in the 20th century.

4. The puppet in the Modern - new viewpoints of puppets (particularly E.G. Craig).

5. New tendencies in modern world puppet theatre.

6. Rediscovered lost genres in puppet theatre.
