Learning outcomes of the course unit

  1. Greatest flexibility in embouchure exercises.
  2. Study of older trombone virtuoso literature from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
  3. Study of pivotal concertos for trombone by J.G. Albrechtsberger, G.C. Wagenseil

On-going student participation in symphony and opera orchestra auditions.

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to study year and student profile.

Course contents

This course focuses on the development of embouchure looseness including trill technique. This covers appropriate selections for the current abilities of the student and precisely defines the direction and intensity of development for important phases of trombone playing. This is supplemented by compositions from the 16th to 18th centuries which demonstrate old trombone virtuosity. Thorough study of two pivotal concertos by J.G. Albrecthsberger and G.C. Wagenseil.

Assessment methods and criteria

Student performance is evaluated in all aspects. First, difficult passages of the composition played are demonstrated. How the student managed these is evaluated. The playing level of the student is also commented in terms of technique, intonation, sound, dynamics and performace.
