Learning outcomes of the course unit

The task of the course is to compare the level of student awareness in dance history. This should enrich their to date theory knowledge to a visible level and provide them a foundation for analysis of a production.

Course contents

In the second semester the first half of the 20th century is covered, in particular the development in America. (Francois Desart and the influence of his philosophical work on new era dance,(Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, as well as the Denishawn school and its students, Doris Humphrey and Martha Graham) and the development of modern dance in Europe (Emil Jaques Dalcroze and his method of teaching students composition and their influence on the development of modern dance in Europe, Bauhaus, German Expressionism, Rudolf von Laban and his work including dance notation, Kurt Joos, Mary Wigman, the rise of Hitler, the occupation period and the end of the war.)
