Learning outcomes of the course unit

  1. Introduction to the particular environment of Opera
  2. Introduction to the structure and organization of an opera house.
  3. Introduction to the economic operation of Opera and various types of financing
  4. Introduction to running of an opera institution in relation to the prepration and implementation of an opera staging.
  5. Enable students to get an overview of opera institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Mode of study

lectures, analysis of economic indicators, analysis of practical experience.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Students have a general knowledge of the opera environment in the Czech Republic and abroad and have comleted „108OOP1.“

Course contents

The organization of an Opera is a complex process which must respect artistic, economic and practical viewpoints vertically and horizontally.

  1. Creation of the dramaturgical plan and performance plan - creating a model plan according to assigned parameters.
  2. Schedule of opera staging preparations - planning, contracting, securing production
  3. Seasonal and repertoire theatre - common practices, advantages and disadvantages, particulars.
  4. Internal communications in an opera ensemble and multi-ensemble theatre.
  5. External communications - promotion, marketing, sponsorship
  6. Co-production performances.
  7. International co-operation - guesting abroad, festivals, hosting artists.
  8. Promotion, marketing, sponsoring
  9. Attendance - the audience member, subscriber, marketing research, audience structure, societal demands, competition environment.
  10. Publications and exhibitions activities
  11. Training activities - projects for children and youth, school performances, opera studios
  12. Special elements of opera performances and their ensurance.
  13. A manager's psychology in the opera environment.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit is awarded based on activity during the lectures and development of the semester paper.

Overal grading is comprised of 20% for activity in lectures, 30% for the written and 50% for the oral parts of the exam.

Conditions for successful completion of the course: active participation, development and presentation of the course work.
