Learning outcomes of the course unit

Poetics.here, is developed not only for mastering the relevant knowledge but particularly, from a perspective of developing feeling for the word and one's native language in the tradition of instruction whose representative at DAMU was Doc. Jiřina Hůrková. In this tradition are (differing from philological or literary studies concepts) for example, in instruction of versology, its specific elements developed to a level in which the relations of meter and rhythm are studied in relation to general issues of stage rhythm. The word is derived from body gesture (from gestus) or becomes a gesture and the realtionship of the semantic and prosodic levels of verbal expresssion make a inseparable part of the study of the relationship of the rational, emotional, discursive and imaginative, external and internal, communicative and artistic, subjective and aesthetic aspects of stage phenomena.

Course contents

The course, intended for 2nd year acting students, provides a deeper glimpse into the issues of the word on stage and at the level where acting theory and practice interact with general poetics, semantics with prosody and verbal action with the general principles of the word and verbal expression.

Instruction in the Winter semester includes this range of issues:

  1. Constative, that is, narrative and performative aspects of verbal expression; narration and imitation (staging) in daily practice and in specific stage forms.
  2. Literary and oral, written text and speaking, stage implementation of speaking as a medium for understanding the sense of the written text through a returning of the word to its body-speaking basis.
  3. Word and image, subjective and poetic expression, literary and stage trope; subjective communication and aesthetic expropriation, undestatement and pathos.
  4. Prose and vers, basic versological concepts; meter and rhythm; most frequently used drama verse forms; Zich on fable types and Mukařovský on motoric events in poetry.
  5. Accent and length: Czech among syllabic and time systems? The word and space in Zeyer's Raduz and Mahulena.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit based on the submitted course paper on a selected topic.

Note

Considering the general neglect of care of language culture in society and particularly the cultivation of feeling for language at the high school level - along with a cultivation of voice and speaking - in the 2nd year of drama acting study it is necessary to draw the attention of the students to the subtle characteristics of drama expression which may not be mastered without a basic knowledge of poetry.
