Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in creating and using the film image in the service of the dramatic expression in film.

A heart-felt understanding of the screenplay, formulation of the dramaturgical concept, emotional sturcture and overall film style (according to the director's desires) are the basics for creating one's own visual idea, which a qualified team is to implement in both the dramaturgical-visual and technical organizationl aspects.

Mode of study

Screenings of films selected by the instructor and their analysis and discussion.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

A basic requirement is the ability to analyse film and film screenplays particularly with a view to their image dramaturgy, awareness of teamwork in the making of a film, basic visual processes, practical experience and results in working with a film's image components.

Course contents

Course instruction should assist students in orienting themselves in the creation of a view of the directorial, dramaturgical, visual, image, implementation and organizational issues from the viewpoint of the cameraman in preparations, shooting and completing a feature film. When creating a film work the image style as the emotional and rational film expression means and composition possibilities is emphasized, which in harmony with the content and as a result of the whole concept, adequately, effects the viewer.

Cameraman activity is divided into drama-visual and organizational-technical elements. The cameraman's activity also shares, according to the stage, preparations, implementation and completion of the project. An important part is the procedures in shooting exponometric, color, make-up and acting rehearsals, use of techniques in creating the color-tone atmosphere, camera movement, etc.

Explanation of the concepts of the Cameraman, Head-cameraman, main-cameraman, assistant cameraman, assistant camera, activity content, responsibility, expert authority and competence. The camerman in a creative team (directing, camera, staging, architect, editor).

Anaysis and development of cameraman characterstics.

Activity and responsibility of the cameraman during preparations, implementation research, shooting and completion (post-production) of a feature film.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students, based on the screenings, examples, analyses and discussions freely decide which film of the school screenings they will devote themselves to in the written analysis of cameraman's work in the preparations period and shooting itself. Also, they will assess to what extent, according to their opinion, the collaboration of the director, dramaturgist cameraman and artistic elements succeeded or fulfilled expectations, where they see deficiencies, what they appreciate and why. Submission of the written paper is a condition for receiving credit.
