Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course aim is not only to give a basic picture of the given excerpt of the development of European visual culture and provide a basic summary of works and style attributes which are an expression of our collective visual memory, but also to provide and cultivate instruments of a grasp and understanding of historical visual artefacts and their relationships and contexts.

Presumed basic bearing in the history of art and cultural history of Europe and a visual sensitivity required of a FAMU student.

Course contents

A. Transalpine Renaissance and its precursor.

  1. Dividing the Alps into two cultures? The genesis of tranalpine visual culture. Conflict of antique depiction of scupted forms and northern abstract ornaments as the conflict of urban and nomadic cultures? The Renaissances before the Renaissance.
  2. Foundations of Gothic architecture. Medieval Gesamtkunstwerk. Genesis of Christian art (cross-section). Is God in the picture?
  3. Basics of Christian iconography. Art and liturgy.
  4. Renaissance sculpture. Establishment of domestic art in a European context.
  5. Art and representation - Charles' Court arts program.
  6. The artist and craftsman in the Middle-ages a at the beginnings of the new era, movements and shop operations, guilds, training.
  7. Visualization of everydayness - the Medieval town, Profane architecture and residential culture. Medieval perception of the landscape and natural environment.
  8. Hussitism and problems of iconoclasm.
  9. Bohemian, Moravian and Silesian Renaissance or the extended Middle Ages.

B. Mannerism as a cultural type.

  1. Issues with the Classic. Art and theory. Iconography and interpretation. Paragons, the institutionalization of art in the 16th century and complete emancipation of visual art from craft.
  2. Drawing, concept, intention. Issues with academies. Issues in the tranformation of traditional court arts.
  3. Erotism in art (cross-section)
  4. Rudofinum arts, multiculturality, the center and periphery.
