Course contents
SUNDAY, MARCH 8
Lecture: What Is With This Pitching Thing?
10 am – 11:30 am | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
Every year, experienced documentary mentor Mikael Opstrup watches 700–800 pitching trailers and hundreds of presentations. At the same time, he is probably one of the very few film professionals who still sees pitching as an important constructive part of the filmmaking process and something that should be preserved. In this lecture, he shares his view of pitching trailers as well as what purpose presenting a not-yet-existing film might have.
Lecture: Ringing the Bell – How to Begin Film
5:30 pm – 7 pm | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
The first few minutes of a film are the most important. The topic is set in the exposition and the aesthetic means which transports the topic are presented. The viewer needs rules of the game to understand a narrative. Using film examples, Niki Mossböck will show the beginnings of different documentary films she edited and will discuss why they are edited in this way and what a good beginning should do.
MONDAY, MARCH 9
Presentation: Pitch the Doc – Don't Let Them Lose Your Thread
9 am – 10 am | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
Introduction to Pitch the Doc as example of web-based tool for professional preparation of “film packs”, and for continuous promotion and building the international recognition of documentary projects. How to use it to establish new contacts, and to maintain business relations initiated at pitchings and co-production meetings.
Masterclass: Nanfu Wang
10 am – 11:30 am | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
One of today’s most progressive filmmakers, an Emmy-nominated director Nanfu Wang (One Child Nation, I Am Another You, Hooligan Sparrow), is internationally celebrated for her courageous and carefully crafted storytelling. In her masterclass, she delves into the art of shaping personal stories that seed social change.
Masterclass: Fredrik Gertten
5:30 pm – 7 pm | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
In his Masterclass, Swedish director and journalist Fredrik Gertten will speak about his method of developing his new investigative documentary PUSH, awarded among others the Politiken Audience Award – CPH:DOX, Global Docs Jury Award – DOCSMX, Open Eyes Youth Jury Award – Nuremberg IHRDFF, and will also talk about his work with protagonists. Sharing her thoughts about the process and joining Fredrik in discussion will be the main protagonists of Push Leilani Farha, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing.
TUESDAY, MARCH 10
Lecture: Distributing Diversity
9:30 am – 11 am | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
“Speaking about Documentary Distribution, it’s assumed to be about making non-fiction travel, and sell. We call international distribution companies Sales Agents, while most of us are as much driven by passion for content as the filmmakers themselves. I want to talk about how we make sure the best stories get out there, get seen, and earn money for their creators, as well.” Esther van Messel, First Hand Films
Case Study: How to Co-produce Between Western and Eastern Europe: The Documentary Trees Floating
2 pm – 3:30 pm | Cervantes Institute, Gallery
The documentary feature Trees Floating by Salomé Jashi is a co-production between CORSO Film / Germany, Mira Film / Switzerland and Sakdoc Film / Georgia. The case study by Erik Winker describes the development, financing and shooting process of the film and talks about opportunities and difficulties of producing between countries with such different living and financing situations.
Presentation: Czech Docs… Coming Soon
2:30 pm – 4 pm | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall

This event is organized in cooperation with the Audiovisual Producers' Association (APA). Moderated by Diana Tabakov (Doc Alliance Films).
Case Study: The Art of Producing Documentaries on Art
4:30 pm – 5:45 pm | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
Austrian producer Johannes Rosenberger of Navigator Film will share his experience and will offer his insight into differences in navigating producing and co-producing different documentary genres using award-winning feature length documentary The Great Museum and successful documentary series The Art of Museums for his case study.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11
Panel Discussion: Filmmaking Against Dictatorships: How to Shoot and Keep Your Freedom
5 pm – 6:30 pm | Cervantes Institute, Cinema Hall
In the era of alt-truth, fake news and troll farms, the critical filmmaking is more than necessary to advocate for the voice of the powerless, promote freedom of speech, address any injustice coming from the official structures and fight for the truth. It is more alarming that even Europe is becoming affected by the inconspicuous powers of certain governments trying to manipulate, or silence critical voices. What are the real-life conditions of filmmaking under such pressure? How to make your films even against the “creative” censorship methods and state oppression? And who could be your partner in bringing your stories to broader audience? The moderated panel discussion will bring guests and filmmakers to share their experience and talk about the obstacles the critical filmmaking is facing now.
