Learning outcomes of the course unit

Directing student:

Producing a creative exercise in narrative fiction filmmaking. Pre-production, production and postproduction of the graduation project. Potential fundraising, management of various grants for filmmakers. Producing film that is ready for potential festival presentation.

Screenwriting student:

Feature length script as a result of an intense 3rd year CDM screenwriting tutorial. The script is a main artistic output of a screenwriter´s studies.

Present a project during pitching, directors treatment delivery 3 days prior pitching (dir. treatment has to contain essential crew members: DoP and camera crew, production manager, set designer, sound designer). First script draft ready by beginning of February.

The execution of the project is preceded by successfully accomplished script. Equipment list has to be prepared by the graduation project crew with accordance to available budget. This list has to be provided to FAMU International production office for ordering.

Present a first draft of script during pitching at the beginning of the Spring term.

Course contents

DIRECTING

Directing students write and direct short film up to 20 minutes. Students are lead in their tutorial to develop their final film. There are no limits in style - except of avoding non-narrative approach.

Regarding the graduation film crew: the initiative comes from CDM 3rd year directing students who actively searches for a) producer, b) DoP (Cinematography Department master degree in English).

The project definition: Joint exercise between Master degree student of Cinematography and FAMU International Cinema and Digital Media directing student based on script developed by directing student within the FAMU International directing workshop.

SCREENWRITING

Screenwriting students write a final script within the Tutorial, they pitch its 1st draft during the early spring term pitching

Assessment methods and criteria

CDM graduation project is assessed by state exam committee during the state exams.

If the cinematography student uses the exercise as their final ?directing? one for the state exams, the work is assessed during the Cinematography department state exam.

Note

The camera, light and grip list has to be created according to the script and location possibilities and has to respect budget for graduate film. No extension of budget is possible. Digital/film technology is possible.
