Learning outcomes

Students will learn about Agnès Godard, an important filmmaker of world cinema, her work, her background and her methods.

Agnès Godard, cinematographer to directors such as Wim Wenders, Agnès Varda, Ursula Meier and Claire Denis, is considered one of the most remarkable female filmmakers in world cinema. Early in her career, she worked as a camera assistant alongside Robby Müller on Wim Wenders' emblematic film Paris, Texas (1984) and on the German director's subsequent famous film Heaven Over Berlin (1987) with cinematographer Henri Alekan. Her first work as a principal cinematographer was Wim Wenders' three-and-a-quarter-hour Cannes documentary Room 666 (1982). This was followed by collaborations with Agnès Varda, André Téchine, Claude Berri, Carol Morley and especially Claire Denis, with whom she made fifteen feature films (including I Don't Want to Sleep, 1994; Friday Night, 2002; L'Intrus, 2004). Her films have earned her several nominations for the prestigious César Award for Best Cinematography, one of which she won (Good Work, dir. Claire Denis, 1999). To date, Godard has made nearly five dozen films.
