Contents

The lecture aimes to explain to the students how the film studies’ findings, or references to cinema as such, are used in comic studies. We will talk about the similarities and differences between these two “arts” - the seventh and the ninth. Students will also try to adopt one medium into the other (both ways), and I believe that a lively discussion on the similarities and differences between comics and film will follow.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Students will receive credit for their participation and activity. The workshop will be divided into two parts - students will in groups, or pairs (depending on the number of participants) have to figure out how to “translate” a scene from the film into a comics, and – vice versa - how they would “translate” several pages from the comics into the film. I will choose the comics and movies that were already adapted, and we will compare the actual adaptation with the ones that the students will come up with on the spot.

Note

This workshop occurs at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague as part of the project “How are Comics Studies using Film Studies findings?” with the support of the Institutional Endowment for the Long Term Conceptual Development of Research Institutes, as provided by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic in the year 2022-2024.
